Whether they're a seasoned layout builder or just starting out, finding the perfect gift for a model railway hobbyist doesn't have to be a mystery. Here's your guide to getting it right.

First, Know Their Scale

Model railways come in different scales, and this matters more than almost anything else. The most common in the UK are:

OO scale (1:76) – by far the most popular, and a safe bet if you're unsure
O scale (1:43.5) – larger, more detailed, and favoured by experienced modellers
N scale (1:148) – compact and ideal for smaller layouts

If you can find out which scale they model in, you'll immediately narrow down your options enormously. A quick peek at their layout or a casual question to a family member can save a lot of guesswork.

Starter Gift Ideas (Under £20)

These make great stocking fillers or add-ons to a larger gift:

Scenic materials – static grass, scatter, ballast, and foliage tufts are always being used up and are genuinely useful

Tips for Buying Without Spoiling the Surprise

Ask a fellow hobbyist. If they belong to a model railway club, a fellow member will almost certainly be able to point you in the right direction.

Check their "wish list." Many modellers keep a mental (or actual) list of things they want. A subtle conversation with their partner or a family member who shares the hobby can be invaluable.

When in doubt, go consumable. Scenic materials, paints, and gift cards are always welcome because they're always needed. You can't go wrong.

Think about their stage of the hobby. A beginner benefits from starter kits and tools. An experienced modeller will appreciate something more specific to their layout's theme or era.

A Note on Kits vs. Ready-to-Run

There are two broad camps in model railways: those who love building from kits (the satisfaction of constructing something from scratch) and those who prefer ready-to-run models (straight out of the box onto the track).
